Your mental health matters — and we are so glad that you're here! If you're feeling nervous or anxious about your upcoming session — that's okay! Being prepared and knowing what to expect can help you feel more comfortable and ready. Here are a few ways you can prepare for your session!
Make sure everyone is available for the visit.
Whether it's just you and your partner or the whole family, make sure you're all available at the time of your appointment. We'll send you a Zoom link to join the appointment 15-minutes prior to the visit starting. You can share that link with all participating individuals if they'd like to join separately. You're more than welcome to join the visit together from the same location, too!
Choose a quiet, comfortable space.
Visits typically last for 50 minutes. Find a quiet, private space where you all feel comfortable discussing what's going on. Make sure the area is well-lit and free from distractions. A stable internet connection is also essential to ensure your session runs smoothly. We want you to be focused and have an open mind during your session, so please don’t drive during it!
Get the Zoom app and test your technology.
Before your session, we recommend you test your computer, tablet or smartphone to make sure everything is working. Check your internet connection, and make sure your camera and microphone are working. If you're using a mobile device or tablet, you'll need to download the Zoom app on your phone before your visit to avoid any disruption in joining. At the time of your visit, we will send you a link to join! If you have any troubles, you can always contact us through the in-app message center or online.
Think about what you want to talk about.
Your provider will ask you about what brings you to your session! You may also talk through your life experiences, stressors and strengths. This is also a good chance for you and your provider to get to know each other. You can also ask your provider questions like:
- What is your approach?
- How many visits might I need?
- What can I expect in a typical visit?
- How will we measure progress?
- What should I do between visits?
Be ready to take notes.
Have a notebook and pen handy or use a note-taking app on your device to jot down important information and action items from your visit. Your provider may provide personalized advice and tips that you'll want to remember and try out!
Stay open and honest.
The success of your visits depends largely on open and honest communication. You’ll work together as a team to support your mental health. Your provider is there to support you, not judge you, so share as much information as possible to get the most accurate and helpful advice. As with all care from First Stop Health, your visits are completely confidential.
Follow up.
After your session, you can review your notes and any materials your provider provided. Try the strategies and recommendations discussed during your visit. Your provider will stay in touch with you to monitor your progress and adjust your plan as needed. Be sure to schedule and keep your visit times so you stay on track!
Preparing for a mental health visit doesn't have to be complicated. With a bit of preparation, you can ensure your visit is productive and sets you on the right path toward achieving your health and wellness goals. We're here to support you!
