Preparing for orthopedic surgery can be an overwhelming experience, but your healthcare team is there to support you every step of the way. However, to ensure you have all the information that you need, it’s crucial to ask the right questions before undergoing any procedure.

Orthopedic Surgery Prep Questions

From understanding the procedure and its benefits to exploring potential risks and recovery plans, asking these questions will empower you to make decisions and participate in your treatment.

  • What is the procedure called? How is it done?
  • Why are you recommending it? Are there alternatives?
  • What are the benefits of this procedure in terms of pain relief, functioning, and mobility? Also, how long will they last?
  • What are the risks?
  • What is the success rate for this procedure?
  • What percentage of patients improve following the procedure?
  • How many of these procedures does this hospital perform in a year?
  • Will this surgery solve my problem? Will I need more surgeries in the future?
  • What will happen if I don’t have the surgery now?
  • If I want a second opinion, who should I call?
  • Will I need any tests or medical evaluations before surgery?
  • What kind of anesthesia is used? Are there possible after-effects or risks? Will I meet with the anesthesiologist in advance? Will they know my needs and/or allergies?
  • What kind of implant or prosthesis is involved? What are the outcomes of using this device? Finally, how long will it last?
  • Will I have pain following the procedure? What can I take for pain? Can I manage pain without medication?
  • How long will recovery take? And, what are my limitations during recovery?
  • What do I need to do after surgery? Will I need durable medical equipment, home health services, or home accommodations? Will I have any disability following surgery? Will I need physical therapy?
  • When can I return to work? When can I drive my car? When can I have sexual activity?
  • Are there any materials about this surgery that I can review?
  • What should I do to prepare for the surgery to have the best possible outcome?

Finally, the key to bouncing back after orthopedic surgery is being informed. Your medical team is there to address your concerns. We’re here to support you!
