Good nutrition is one of the most important parts of staying healthy. According to the World Health Organization*, up to 80% of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes can be prevented through a healthy diet, regular physical activity and avoiding tobacco use.

When we eat well, we feel better, have more energy, and reduce our risk of getting sick. But knowing what to eat can sometimes be confusing. That is where a registered dietitian comes in! They are food experts who can guide us in making the best choices to keep our bodies healthy.

What is a registered dietitian?
A registered dietitian has special training and knowledge about food and how it affects our bodies. To become a registered dietitian, they must complete a college degree in nutrition or a related field, complete supervised practice and pass a national exam. Dietitians can also obtain additional certifications in fitness, obesity, diabetes, and many others.

What does a registered dietitian do?

At First Stop Health, our registered dietitians work with people to create healthy eating habits and patterns that fit their unique needs, whether for managing weight, improving or enhancing athletic performance, or addressing health conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure.

They provide education on how to make healthier food choices, how to read food labels and how to prepare nutritious meals that taste great.

When should I see a registered dietitian?

You will want to talk with one of our registered dietitians if you want to eat better, feel better or if you have a special health problem like diabetes or food allergies. They will support you to:

  • Eat foods that provide health benefits: They can show you what foods are good for your body and what foods should be consumed in moderation.

  • Create a healthy eating plan: They can help you decide what to eat every day. They will talk to you about your likes, dislikes, and lifestyle so you can be sure the plan is something you will be happy to follow. Your culture and ethnic preferences will be considered.

  • Address health concerns: If you have a health concern, they can help you find foods that benefit you. They can also work with your First Stop Health doctor to support a healthy eating plan that impacts your health goals.

What is a registered dietitian visit with First Stop Health like?

A registered dietitian visit is a friendly and supportive experience. Here is what you can expect:

  • During the visit you will discuss your health concerns, lifestyle habits and desires to be healthier. A history of your food and nutrition habits and how often you engage in physical activity will be discussed. The visit is a judgement-free space and a collaborative approach.

  • Nutrition education can be provided to address your questions and concerns about healthy eating based on specific health conditions like hypertension or diabetes.

  • Together you will set goals and action steps for health improvement. Your plan will be personalized and tailored to fit your individual needs.

  • Regular visits can support you by checking your progress, adjusting your plan, and offering continued support. This ongoing relationship helps you stay on track and make lasting changes.
With their personalized advice and ongoing support, a registered dietitian can guide you on your journey to better health, making it easier to reach your goals and maintain a balanced, nutritious diet. Remember, taking care of your body through healthy eating is one of the best things you can do for yourself! Schedule a visit with a First Stop Health registered dietitian to get started!
